Performance Designs Optimum Reserve.

Note: Please read the ordering instructions in the description below for links to the PD Stock List and Design Program.

The Optimum Reserve is made from a 30 denier low-permeability, low-bulk fabric available exclusively from Performance Designs. PD combined this fabric with special aerodynamics and extensive reinforcing to create great strength, better performance, and a far smaller pack volume for a given size. The Optimums are rated for maximum exit weights ranging from 220 pound to as much as 290 pounds! The Optimum has successfully been drop-tested at weights and speeds considerably higher than those required for FAA certification according to TSO C23d, the highest standard to date. The Optimum flies and lands far more like a main parachute with a more powerful flare, by a wide margin, of any reserve PD has ever tried.

I have had 4 rides on the same Optimum, 3 of them were real rodeos! The Optimum opens very fast but not so that it slams you. It is a very docile parachute and really reliable and my rigger loves how it packs! Safety orange is my favorite color!

I was lucky enough to try the Optimum at a boogie a while back before I bought it and I was sold from there. Great opening and flare. My rigger was impressed by the pack volume. Until a better reserve comes out I won't buy anything else.

Once the downsizing trend started, reserves got kinda sketechy! People were landing new high performance modern wings at high wing loadings, but were jumping reserves designed 20+ years ago that were meant to be jumped at super low wing loadings. Shitty landings, and abrupt stalls were common enough that I know 3 people who have broken bones when they learned that their reserve wasn't designed to fly like their main.

The OP resolves this. It is an amazing wing, and lands like a dream. My first OP ride was on a 113 loaded around 1.7 to 1. I always do practice landings under new wings, and I was impressed when the canopy didn't fold up even after a long flare. Out of habit, I pulled double fronts on landing, but it was not necessary.

On my second rig, I went a size smaller...and my first ride was at Eloy (1500 feet...no wind). Once again, very happy with how the wing performed closer to 1.8.

Performance Designs puts more research and development and quality control resources into their manufacturing process than any other company out there, and it shows with the Optimum. I have jumped this canopy more than once after a cutaway and have been impressed with the opening, flight characteristics, and flare every time. After a wingsuit cutaway that resulted in line twists under the Optimum, the canopy flew straight while I easily and quickly straightened out the twists. If you're on the fence about this reserve, don't be. You can always demo it as a main to experience what everyone is raving about.

Great reserves, love the smaller pack volume. And the flare authority, even for F-111, is very impressive. Soft, stand up landings even on hot, no-wind days (loading at 1.4:1).

Demoed the Optimum and couldn't be happier with the easy and predictable flight characteristics. The flare is great too. Having demoed it, flying and landing my reserve is one less thing to worry about when having to cutaway.

I have two Optimum 143's and have had three rides on one of them. I load my reserve at a little over 1.85 ft/lb. Even at this loading, the wing is responsive, forgiving and very predictable. The flare is strong on the bottom end and has plenty of range. If I ever have another reserve ride, it will be on an Optimum!
