Nitro: Custom in 8 weeks. The Nitro is a canopy for a broad range of skydiving experience levels.
Depending upon wing loading and piloting, the 9-cell semi-elliptical Nitro can fly leisurely or extremely fast. Recommended wing loadings are to a maximum of 1.7 pounds per square foot. Less experienced skydivers should jump only at much lighter loadings.
It is quite common for a non-Nitro jumper to ask about the winglets, and without trying to get into any kind of aerodynamic psycho-babble about wind tunnel analyses and such, suffice it to say that these oddball looking appendages on the upper surface work to help reduce the stall speed of the wing, allowing you to make more walk-on landings and fewer landings where you demonstrate the sprint-slide-tumble technique. It won’t take long to you to come to appreciate the measurable effect that they truly reveal, which is the ability to make the canopy seem to hover forever just prior to touchdown. Other advantages are, that the canopy in case of a line twist mostly flies straight on. As you do a crosswind landing you’ll feel the canopy is flying like on rails.
Improved Leading Edge
The nose of the Nitro is fitted with a freely attached leading edge. As a continuous piece of fabric across the entire span of the upper surface, the leading edge is fastened individually to each rib by small tapes. This type of leading edge has shown to provide better stability during the flare.
The profile (or rib shape) of the canopy is designed to provide optimal lift. Airflow separation is effected very late and is extremely good-natured. The pilot will not experience the typical bowtie with our canopies, instead the stall is docile and predictable. These characteristics make it possible with high wing loadings to have a very deep control stroke in the flair without experiencing an immediate stall.
The mesh covers the outboard chamber of the end-cell. It helps prevent end-cell distortion during rich-attitude flight and high speed maneuvers. When any non-crossbraced end-cell is heavily loaded it has a tendency to “stand up” under pressure, distorting the shape of the cell. The mesh helps control the inlet of the end-cell under load, producing more stability and rigidity through all modes of flight.
Nitoro canopies are equipped with Technora (previously known as HMA ) suspension lines which have excellent dimensional stability. This means that the canopy will remain in trim over the entire ( manufacturer prescribed ) lifetime of the line-set. Compared to conventional Kevlar (Aramid) lines, HMA has improved U.V. and abrasion resistance and is less subject to flex-fatigue. Nitro canopies utilize direct-line suspension, (no cascades), resulting in reduced airfoil distortion. Each line can be individually replaced without the need of a sewing machine, ensuring simple and inexpensive maintenance.
The outboard suspension lines are directly attached to the stabilizer. Load-tapes transfer opening-shock forces evenly thru-out the stabilizer and the end-ribs directly above.
Collapsing and resetting the drawstring system on our slider is very simple. The slider stays securely collapsed during flight and requires little maintenance.
The Nitro is available in sizes of 78, 88, 98, 108, 120, 135 and 150 sq.ft. The Nitro comes equipped with soft connector links, nickel-plated slider grommets, and black or tan Technora line.
